What is the TOHO Project?
The TOHO (or Touhou) Project also known as Project Shrine Maiden is a series of Japanese bullet hell shooter video games, created by Team Shanghai Alice in 1996. All games start with the TOHO prefix. Nowadays, the TOHO community is spread throughout the world and is considered to be one of the most active gaming communities.
How did it become so successful?
First of all, the difficult of danmaku "bullet hell" type games, are considered to be the most challenging shoot 'em up games out there. Its music is close to Eurobeat, and its universe is composed only of cute young girls. All the characters are part of one universe called gensôkyô, which was created by the former employee of Taito. Another element that intrigues a lot of fans, is that the games are all programmed, designed, written and composed by one man named ZUN.
ZUN - The creator of The TOHO Project
The fan community continues to grow throughout the world, and they continue to create games, including a copy of the Castlevania series and Touhoumon, a modification of Pokémon FireRed. They also create a countless number of drawings and cosplay looks.
